Engineer Mira House Museum

Known as la Casa Forestal, it is dedicated to the figure of the distinguished engineer, his work and the history of reforestation. On the inside is displayed photographic documentation, furniture and equipment all related to the work of the repopulation of the dunes carried out by Francisco Mira himself.

The House Museum was renovated in 2006 with new exhibition rooms. The engineer’s bedroom and office, the meteorological station and the period staircase, were also incorporated.

In 2019 a big restoration was successfully carried out with municipal and European funds. Thus, a part of the original structure of the building was recovered by removing the remodeling job done throughout the 20th century. In the house is exhibited the material that was left in when the reforestation task ended, the objects of the forest guards and also belongings that recovered from engineer Mira’s house in Hondón de las Nieves (Middle Vinalopo).

Almost a thousand people led by engineer Mira managed to turn a desert landscape into a lush forest preventing the sands from engulfing the village.
This exhibition shows the real challenge that was the “Project for the Reforestation of the Dunes of Guardamar and Elche”.
