CHANGES IN THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT AND URBAN EVOLUTION
Belluga, Larramendi and Mira, the great names in local contemporary history
The final stretch of the Segura River is a natural space marked by constant changes. During an evolutionary process of thousands of years it went from a coast located much further inland, to a marsh where fresh and salt water combined. These changes also affected the configuration of the existing dune system in the coastal strip near the river.
Human action would definitely transform this landscape. This process began in Roman times, but it developed mainly in Islamic times. The desiccation of this marsh devised by Cardinal Belluga, definitively turned this lagoon space into a place of agricultural exploitation.

Change of location of the urban area
Los terremotos de 1829 supusieron el cambio de ubicación del casco urbano de Guardamar.
El Ingeniero Agustín Larramendi fue el encargado de diseñar el nuevo trazado urbanístico. Eligió la ligera pendiente donde se sitúa el pueblo en la actualidad, ocupando la franja marítima y desechando la villa medieval amurallada situada en altura. Lo que no pudo prever es que este pueblo de nueva planta se iba a ver amenazado por los cambios medioambientales provocados por la acción humana.
Por lo cual el proyecto de repoblación de la dunas diseñado por Francisco Mira, sirvió de actuación correctora en el medio y de protección de Guardamar ante la inminente destrucción.
